Everything you need to know about Bar-Ilan University's gifted youth math exam — structure, topics, scoring, registration, and preparation tips
The gifted youth math exam is an annual exam by Bar-Ilan University, designed for 5th-6th grade students across Israel. The exam's purpose is to identify mathematically talented students and offer them a unique enrichment program at the university. The exam is in multiple-choice format and includes 24 questions to be solved in 60 minutes.
Important note: there is no penalty for wrong answers on the exam. It's always worth marking an answer, even if you're not sure — guessing improves your chances.
Questions 1–16 (16 questions)
Tests advanced-level math knowledge: natural numbers, fractions, percentages, geometry, order of operations, word problems, and more. Difficulty increases gradually.
Questions 17–24 (8 questions)
Tests thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills: sequences, logic puzzles, combinatorics, algebraic thinking, and more. Requires creativity and systematic work.

Each question is worth the same number of points. The final score is calculated based on the number of correct answers. A score above 75% is considered excellent and significantly increases the chances of acceptance into the program. Results are published a few weeks after the exam and sent directly to parents.
Registration usually opens at the beginning of the school year (September–November). The exam itself takes place in January–February. Registration is done on the official gifted youth program website, and the registration fee is approximately 120 NIS.
Start 2–3 months before the exam. 15–30 minutes a day, 3–4 times a week.
Complete at least 2–3 full simulation exams to get used to the format and timing.
Focus on weak topics — the MathWiz system identifies them automatically.
Practice time management — 2.5 minutes per question on average.
